Tami, Olivia, and I hiked a couple of trails on the Blue Ridge Parkway yesterday... I came across and photographed this vacant chair at the Brinegar Cabin (milepost 238.5) and thought it symbolic on this day for my entire family.

Another Angel in Heaven

It is with a heavy heart that we have to report Nicholas John has passed on and is now with his brother in heaven. They took him back for surgery and within a matter of minutes his tiny little body just couldn't handle it anymore and he left us. God made them together and they are now playing together in heaven. Although we only had them for a short time they will never be forgotten. Nicholas will have a service just like his brothers sometime next week, it will again be a private service. He will be buried right next to his brother right at our church. Thanks to everyone for your support through all this, we love you all and only wish we could talk to you one by one to thank you. One more thing before I sign off. I heard this on the radio this morning and thought I would share it:

Dear Mothers (Good Friday)

I raised Him as a good boy, taught Him well, all through His life.
I tried to do the best I could, as a Mother and a wife.
His Step-Dad was a good man, taught Him well in every way,
And treated Him as his own son, until His dying day.

He always was a good boy, never even raised His voice.
Except on some occasions, when He really had no choice.
He treated people kindly, treated everybody fair.
And if somebody had a problem, He would always care.

People always listened, to the words He had to say,
And they would stay and listen, even late into the day.
Everybody loved Him, from the rich to down and out,
But there were some, who did not want Him going all about.

He never did an evil deed, as everybody knows.
There were a few who said, "He's always stepping on our toes."
"This Man is speaking blasphemy," said leaders in their quote.
"We have the perfect setup here, and He's rocking our boat."

"If only we could shut Him up, and go on like it's been,
But, if He will not shut His mouth, we must get rid of Him.
"So, on that Friday, I stood by and watched them kill my son.
While others watched and wondered, 'what on earth has this boy done?'

I raised Him as a good boy, He made life so rich and full,
And just because He spoke like God, He's called a criminal.
A mother loves her children and she gives the very best.
A mother does the best she can and prays God does the rest.

If God blessed you with children, you must give them back to Him,
And realize deep in your heart, that He's in charge of them.
In this life, there will be times, when you don't understand,
What God is doing, but you know you've done the best you can.

On that Friday, it felt like my heart ripped from my chest,
But, I knew God was in charge and I had done my best.
To be a mother is a blessing, that God does bestow,
But, someday, wants His children back and I thought you should know.

The carter baby Nicholas is doing so much better and proving to be a little fighter. Catherine and John wanted me to relay to everyone that they are so thankful for the thoughts and prayers you all have sent their way.

Baby Michael and Baby Nicholas (twins) arrived in this world several weeks early on March 28th. Baby Michael went home to be with the Lord on March 30 and Baby Nicholas continues to fight the odds. Please keep him and his parents, Michael and Gina Carter, in your prayers.

I'll be happy to see a pair of baseball cleats on those cute feet someday!

Arctic Blast.... BBBRRRRRRRR!

The United States has been hit hard this winter and finally the Arctic Blast (as it has been dubbed by our local TV forecasters) has hit Southeastern NC. Every morning I cut on my computer to look at local news, check emails, and see what's up with the weather. In fact, my opening page shows the temps for Jacksonville NC, Fleetwood NC (where our family mountain lodge is), and Oakland MD (where my wife is from)... this morning the temps read... Jacksonville @ 18 degrees, Fleetwood @ 0 degrees, and Oakland @ -9 degrees... BRRRRRRRRRR! I realize there are people throughout this great country who are laughing at my 18 degrees... the tables are turned in the summer when we get the 100+ temps and it doesn't bother us.

Hello... My name is Teddy. I am quite the adventurer... I travel home every weekend with a student from Mrs Davis' second grade class. The students document their adventures with me in a journal... this weekend I chose to go home with Star-Student Olivia!

Olivia and her family took me to the Jacksonville Christmas Parade. Here we are snuggled together... it was COLD!

The Marine Corps Color Guard started the parade and their band was AWESOME!

A group of singers from Olivia's church rode on a float and sang for us.

All the floats and bands were great but our favorite was the White Oak High School Marching Band... they were the BEST!

Olivia's cousin, Emily, is a drummer in the band.

Here we are with Savannah and Camden... Olivia's niece and nephew.

They saved the best part for last... SANTA! He came to town on a firetruck.

He waved at me and Olivia... afterall... we have been good girls this year!

I even got to hang out with Olivia's older sister Whitney... Olivia calls her "Sissy".

I had a blast at Olivia's house. She introduced me to many of her stuffed animal friends... Can you find me in this photo?

I even had my picture taken with one of her pet cats... Simba!

Thanks for a GREAT weekend Olivia... hope we can do it again soon...

On 6 June 1778 Dudley Lee passed in the vicinity of Taneytown, Frederick Co, MD, as a draft substitute in Colonel Otho Holland William's Regiment, the 6th Maryland. That unit served in New Jersey and New York as part of Washington's army. Dudley continued to re-enlist for the remainder of the war. In August of 1780 he mustered in the 1st Maryland Regiment. This was essentially the same regiment, having been reorganized. By this time, the 1st Maryland was in the Carolinas, under the command of General Nathanial Greene. The regiment took part in most of the major actions of Greene's Southern Campaign.

General George Washington relied heavily upon the Marylanders as one of the few reliable fighting units in the early Continental Army. For this reason, Maryland is sometimes known as "The Old Line State."

Enlisted at the age of 59 and fought throughout the war. Was captured by Stonewall Jackson at Harper's Ferry and released on a prisoners exchange. Fought in several skirmishes and battles... the most famous being the Battle of Monocacy.

Company K, 61st North Carolina Infantry, CSA, War Between the States.

The Tarheels of the Old North State, including over 1300 men from Onslow County, have earned their page in history with their deeds of valor, contributions, and dedication to the Confederate Cause of 1861 - 1865. Among those 1300+ was private Lewis E. Humphrey, Company K, 61st North Carolina Infantry. Lewis enlisted in April 1862 at the age of 34 in the Confederate army. He left behind no slaves... only a wife and five small children to tend the family farm. New Bern (30 miles from his home) had just fallen to Union forces and rumors of an Conscription Act forced him to leave the world he knew and embark on a journey that would eventually bring him back home 2 1/2 years later via a discharge for disability after the Battle of the Crater (late 1864).

Capt Christopher Columbus (CC) Lee (1840~1932)

Company A, 7th West Virginia Infantry, 2nd Army Corps, The Gibraltar Brigade, Army of the Potomac, US Army Veteran Volunteers, War Between the States

Mustered in as a private and moved up the ranks mustering out as Captain of Company A. The 7th West Virginia suffered such heavy casualties that it was reduced from a regiment of ten companies to a battalion of four companies by wars end. CC was wounded on May 3, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville. As sargent... he was urging his men forward when a ball struck him in the face and exited through his open mouth... He wore a beard from that point on. He was furloughed home and missed the Battle of Gettysburg. CC was present for every major campaign with the exception of some of the Wilderness Campaign when he was hospitalized in Washington with malaria and almost died.

Raymond Lee Humphrey (1892~1970)

Casualties: Total 14,683 (KIA-2,058; WIA-12,625).

Commanders: Maj. Gen. W. A. Mann (5 September 1917), Maj. Gen. Charles T. Menoher (19 December 1917), Brig. Gen. Douglas MacArthur (10 November 1918), Maj. Gen. C. A. F. Flagler (22 November 1918).

Raymond was a proud veteran and always celebrated Armistice Day (as he always referred to it)while he was alive. Here he is pictured with a cake for such a celebration... notice the Rainbow Division rainbows. His regiment was the furthermost allied unit in German territory when the Armistice was called at 11:00 AM on the 11th day of the 11th month, 1918. The honor gave his regiment head of column as they headed toward Germany. While marching into Belgium... being the first friendly liberators the Belgians saw in their county in years... the 167th regimental band struck up the tune "Dixie" as they entered the first town.

Oscar Harvey Lee (1895~1973)

Seaman Second Class, U.S. Navy, World War I

Oscar Lee was the recipient of the Navy Cross of Valor for service in World War I. The medal was presented by Josephus Daniels, Secretary of the Navy, for the president, on November 11, 1920, for services during the war as set forth in the following letter:

Citation:

The Navy Cross is awarded to Seaman Second Class Oscar H. Lee, U.S. Navy, for extraordinary heroism as a member of the crew of boats sent out from the U.S.S. Wanderer to the rescue of men from the SS Florence H, which vessel, loaded with explosives, was burned in the harbor of Quiberon on the night of the 17th of April, 1918. Almost immediately after the outbreak of fire the water in the vicinity of Florence H was covered with burning powder boxes, many of which exploded, scattering flames throughout the wreckage. The crews of the Wanderer's boats drove their boats into the burning mass without thought of danger to themselves and, assisted by boats from the other ships present in the harbor, succeeded in saving the lives of many men who, but for the help so promptly and heroically extended, must have perished in the wreckage.

Oscar Lee's name is in the Hall of Fame in Washington for his naval activities, and his image is in bronze in the Maryland State Hall of Fame.

Wounded in the Battle of Okinawa... see report below...

The attack against Okinawa was launched on Easter Sunday, April 1, 1945. Nobody suspected at the time that it was to be the last beachhead, indeed the last campaign, of World War II.

The 7th, assigned to XXIV Corps, pivoted at the east coast and started on the drive south. Soon it experienced the heaviest Japanese artillery fire of the Pacific war, absorbing more than 40,000 rounds of high explosive in two weeks. The 32d Infantry was on the Division's left on the Nakagusuku Wan (later Buckner Bay); the 184th Infantry under Colonel Roy A. Greene was on the right. Colonel Frank Pachler's 17th Infantry soldiers were in close support. Finn's 32nd Soldiers met a strong Japanese force on Skyline Ridge, which became the scene of bitter conflict. In assessing the Division's accomplishments in the Okinawa campaign, the staff reckoned that the Hourglass men had killed between 25,000 and 28,000 Japanese soldiers, and had taken 4,584 prisoners--more than half of them soldiers of the Japanese regular army, including more than a hundred officers up to the rank of major. The Division suffered 1,116 killed, and nearly 6,000 wounded, to make the total of its World War II casualties 8,135.

25 years ago today... History inspires artwork...

Events in history are often inspiration for my paintings... but when history hits on a personal level sometimes I find myself captivated to paint a scene for reasons beyond mere aesthetics or nostalgia.

Such a historical event happened to our small community 25 years ago today. It was the first day that the war on terrorism began with the largest non-nuclear explosion since World War II... the Beirut bombing.

In the early morning of October 23, 1983, the First Battalion, 8th Marines Headquarters building was destroyed by a non-Lebanese, terrorist-driven truck, laden with compressed gas-enhanced explosives. This truck, like many others, had become a familiar sight at the airport and so did not raise any alarm on this morning. The resulting explosion and the collapse of the building killed 241 Marines, Sailors, and Soldiers.

Many of the victims of this atrocity were residents of Jacksonville, North Carolina. They were known as fathers, neighbors, fellow church members, and little league baseball and soccer coaches. The community was stunned over the loss of these fine men and donations began to flow to their memory. This became the "birth" of the Beirut Memorial where their names are engraved along side "They Came In Peace"...

This tragic event reminds us of how fragile life is, how costly freedom is, and how much our community appreciates the military! On a personal level I have included a couple paintings inspired by this day in history...

The Soccer Princess strikes again!

Yesterday found our Soccer Princess dressed and ready for another big game. Nonnie got to go this time... had to see the Princess in action after my last write up.... Anything can happen when Princess' play soccer...

If the score was kept The Princess' team was down at least 15 to zip at the half... I thought I would encourage the Princess by saying, "BoBanna... if you score a goal Old Dad and you will go get an ice cream cone on Wednesday". This must have been the motivation she needed... she scored... but... in the other team's goal. Didn't matter in the least to her... she looks at me and gives the thumbs up and mentions ICE CREAM! Doesn't matter to me in the least either... this Wednesday is officially Ice Cream Day for Old Dad and the Soccer Princess!

Today... for a couple reasons... I am ever mindful of this quote that rings so true.

#1... Today is Kristi's birthday and she would have been 41. I can remember the day she was born... I remember dad loading all the frilly dresses in the car at the hospital when we took her home... I can even remember the space we were parked in... not to bad for a six year old at the time. I miss her dearly...

#2... Today is the Memorial Service for a dear old friend who recently lost a three year battle with cancer... Jaye Ross... "Birdie" to family and friends. Birdie and her husband, Kenny, were those type people who (although we only knew for a short period of time) left lasting footprints on our (Tami and me) souls. Jaye gave Tami her first job when I moved her here from the Maryland mountains after we got married. Kenny was instrumental in getting our photography business off the ground when we started it 20 years ago. Dylan's first word was "Bobbie", the name of their daughter... he even named his security blanket "Bobbie". Austin, Kenny and Jaye's son, went to school with our oldest daughter Lyndsey. Kenny's mom, "Gram" babysat Dylan for us... their family was intertwined with ours until a new job took them from our area around 1995ish and we simply fell out of touch. Busy lives I guess. The next time we would see them was the day before Olivia was born when they came into town for the funeral of friend who was dear to both our families. I never in a million years dreamt that that would be the last time I would see Birdie. She was the picture of perfect health and natural beauty. As in the case with Kristi... you never know what a day will bring and I got an email from Kenny... "Is that you Bern?". Excited to hear from an old friend I was not prepared for the info he was about to share... "Birdie is in the last stages of cancer"... our hearts sank. Within a week we got the message from Kenny that Birdie passed. When I think of Birdie I think of a person that thoroughly enjoyed life, her family, and her friends. I think a piece of everyone she knew left with her. Tami and I are so proud of her fight and especially of Kenny who stood by her every moment. We're just as proud of Austin and Bobbie and are sorry that we could not be in South Carolina today to tell them in person. Please let this blog post serve as a tribute to Birdie and the whole family... God bless you all and may you find comfort in all the great memories that never erode... that's what Tami and I have... great memories of Birdie and her whole family.

This old barn was a joy to paint for two reasons...

#1... It's sentimental value. I grew up just down the road from this old barn that belonged to my g-great uncle. My brother and I along with other kids who lived nearby spent many hours playing in and around it.

#2... I painted this one en plein aire with My lil' painting buddy, Olivia

Ask any southerner... "What are gourds best used for?"... nine out of ten will tell you... "birdhouses". Anywhere in the rural south... a family garden is usually lined with a row or two of gourd birdhouses. This scene is so reminiscent of my childhood... in fact this plein air outing was within walking distance of my house.

Anything can happen when Princess' play soccer...

Today was a big day for the family Princess, Savannah Grace. It was her 4th birthday and her first soccer game watched by me... "Old Dad"... a name she came up with instead of granddaddy a long time ago.

She... referred to as The Princess from this point on... plays in the three/four year old Southwest Soccer League. The name of her team is the Hurricanes and they are coached by The Princess' daddy.

GO HURRICANES!!!!!!!

Lining up for the BIG game!... Looking pretty good at this point.

I asked The Princess to strike a soccer pose and this is what I got... any ballerinas out there may be able to identify this one for Old Dad. At one point in the game she was driving toward the goal in what look liked a sure thing when she saw me with camera in hand... she stopped and struck this pose... needless to say... no goal.

The Princess' baby brother, Camden, had the soccer thingy down pat... only problem... keeping him off the field. Good thing his Poppa was there to coral him when needed.

Older brother, Christian, was really into the game... his DS game that is!

The Princess drives the ball toward the goal...

NOT... right pass the goal and into the woods with both teams following her every step of the way.

Whoops... a close one... no score yet... BTW... where's the other team's goalie?

He was here earlier... I even snapped a photo of him. In fact this shot was taken just after his coach spent a full five minute time out untangling his whole right arm from the goal netting.

Strange things would happen during this game. Soccer players would leave the field for no reason at all..

At one point The Princess decided to take a break... left the field and went took a RELAX in her baby brother's car seat on the sidelines.

At another point she was looking in the trash can... go figure!

In fact... there were several times when Coach Daddy could only muster two or three players on the field at a time.

Ahhh... The Princess back in action!

"Get out of my way cry-baby... The Princess is coming through"....

Never call someone a cry-baby... you don't know when you might be one yourself. I learned something today in 3/4 year old soccer... crying has a domino effect... At one point there were five kids crying on the sidelines for no apparent reason... go figure!

Christian still enjoying HIS game but has digressed to his baby brother's car seat... Old Dad may use this photograph in his senior yearbook in a few years.

Meanwhile... Camden has made his way from the field to a tractor.

"No Princess... kick the ball that way"... says Coach Daddy. The Princess did score a goal for her team but it wasn't in the usual way... seems she has a trick play up her sleeve... She drove the ball toward the goal... faked a kick in... fell down... and knocked it in with her head... IMPRESSIVE!

Finally the show was over and it was time for "High Fives"...

and then the best part of the game...

SNACKS!

This painting, "Bradham's Pharmacy... Birthplace of Pepsi-Cola," is set in downtown New Bern, North Carolina and was painted en plein aire as part of the 6th Annual Worldwide Paint Out sponsored by the International Plein Air Painters. It marks the spot that was once a pharmacy where Caleb Bradham invented "Brad's Drink" in 1898 which he later patented as Pepsi-Cola. The historical site is owned by the Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company which serves as Pepsi memorabilia store where visitors can purchase a variety of Pepsi products and even belly up to a vintage soda fountain. I had a blast painting this one and met several nice people while working on it...

Several plein air artists from Eastern North Carolina (myself included) converged on the historic and beautiful town of New Bern, North Carolina to take part in the IPAP (International Plein Air Painters) 6th Annual Worldwide Paint Out. Plein air painters from all over the world agreed to meet in various locations all over the globe to plein air paint on September 5, 6, and 7. This special gathering is to help promote the unique art of painting "en plein aire"... a French term that translates... "in open air". This is my first of several paintings that weekend.

I headed out of the house, riding the heels of tropical storm Hanna, eager to plein air paint with of a couple of my artist friends who I was to meet in New Bern, North Carolina. A Kindergarten teacher was observing her classroom of children while they were drawing. She would occasionally walk around to see each child's work.

As she got to one little girl who was working diligently, she asked what the drawing was.

The girl replied, "I'm drawing God."

The teacher paused and said, "But no one knows what God looks like."

Without missing a beat, or looking up from her drawing, the girl replied, "They will in a minute."

Plein Air Artists and Hanna converge of New Bern...

Tropical storm Hanna may make Saturday's Worldwide Plein Air Paint Out a bit challenging.... none-the-less many Eastern NC artists still plan to converge on the historical town of New Bern... myself included! She is projected (at this point) to be out of here by Saturday afternoon with Sunday being beautiful! The IPAP (International Plein Air Painters) holds a worldwide paint out every year (this is the 6th annual event) to promote the tradition and bring exposure to painting "en plein aire"... a French term which translates... "in open air". Does anyone know the French term "in open air and WIND"?

If I were stranded on a deserted island with only one album to listen to which one would it be?

OK... I'm showing my age... besides... where would I plug in my turntable...

If I were stranded on a deserted island with only one person or group/band to load into my IPOD (assuming it had life lasting batteries) who would it be?

Why THIRD DAY of course!... emphasis on THIRD DAY!

WHY Third Day of course!... emphasis on WHY... you ask?

To be honest... it would be hard to limit myself to one artist/group downloaded to my IPOD... my eclectic tastes include a wide range of music and artists. Here are some examples of some of my favs... Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Jackson Browne, Michael Card, Rory Gallagher, Bob Dylan, Robin Trower, John Lee Hooker, Muddy Waters, Lightnin' Hopkins, U2, Doc Watson, Foghat, Nora Jones, Eva Cassidy, Stephen Foster, Bad Company, Cherish the Ladies, BB King, .... dang... the list looks like it could go on forever so I'll stop now since you get the point.

Why you still ask?

Third Day fulfills all my moods for the various types of music I love... moods that range from Hendrix rocking riffs to Bob Dylan thought provoking ballads. They encompass a broad range of music that covers my moods and likes... to top all that... they enable me to worship my creator is a unique way that soothes my soul. In fact... they share the good news through their music that can lead to saving the soul... give them a listen if you never have.

BTW... I must admit... "I'm traveling 33 1/3 RPM's in an IPOD world..." but... I know a GREAT band when I hear one... thanks Third Day!

{EDIT}... now for the LIVE part... I hope you guys keep "When loves comes to town" in your set for Raleigh... that will give me my Rockin' Blues fix.... see you on the 19th!

Third Day on the third day of August... Kids say the darndest things!

A month a go today, Mark Lee of the Christian rock band Third Day challenged the fans to blog about Third Day on the third of each month... here goes installment #2 from me.

It's been a big week for Third Day and their fans... the release of Revelation and their appearance on Jay Leno's Tonight Show last Tuesday just to mention a couple.

What IMPRESSES and BAFFLES me about the band is the fact that they still seem to have a freshness and undaunting desire and love for what they do. Third Day is on such a roll with the new album, new tour, new webpage, appearances, interviews, etc... it's as if they are young bucks just starting out... Not that they are old timer's but they have been on the rock scene for quite awhile (thank God)! Most bands have reached complete burn out by this point but Third Day presses on with passion... I commend them and thank them for it.

To top all that... Mark and his wife just had a brand new baby... their second child... Congrats to the family!

I can tell the band not only loves what they do... they love their families and KIDS! They even have a section on their webpage just for kids... click HERE...

I have to share my KID story with you... my little version of "kids say the darndest things"...

I am the father of four, three daughters and a son. I shared with you last month about going to a Third Day concert with my two oldest daughters, son-in-law, and wife... HERE.

Our son... (our old baby) will be 18 soon... our older daughters are 25 and 21... then we have Livie, who just turned 7. She was my 40th birthday present... Tami and I call her "Our surprise gift from God that we didn't know we needed but can't live without".

Livie has never been to a concert and was kind of upset when she found out we were taking big sissy's' last time and didn't include her. She's a diehard Third Day fan and was quite excited when Revelation came out so she could hear something NEW from them in dad's car.

I made her day last week when I asked her...

"Since you're seven and a big girl now... would you like to go to a Third Day concert?"...

her excited reply was...

"Yes, Yes, Yes!..."

she then added...

"then can we go see Led Zeppelin?"

Out of the mouths of babes...

We plan to see Third Day on the Music Builds Tour on September 19th in Raleigh, North Carolina. If anyone sees an older man trying to keep up with a high spirited/active seven year old... it's probably me...

Dublin Rocks!

While in Dublin... Tami and I came across some interesting spots of special interest to me.... proving Dublin ROCKS!

Here I am pictured at Rory Gallagher Corner in the Temple Bar area of the city. The late Rory Gallagher is one of my favorite strat playing bluesmen... I've included a video for you to check out.

Here I am at a Dublin rocker's tribute statue... the late Phillip Lynott of the rock band, Thin Lizzy. Enjoy this video which includes another one of my favorite guitarist... Gary Moore who is from Belfast.

On August 20th, 2005, on what would have been his 56th birthday, a statue of Phil Lynott was unveiled in Dublin's Grafton Street by his mother. There to witness the event were members of Thin Lizzy from throughout the band's career. Later that evening they joined forces under the leadership of Gary Moore for a concert that paid tribute to Lynott's memory. Source: Eagle Rock Entertainment

Below is a photo of "The Clarence Hotel" located along the Liffey River in Dublin. The cool thing about The Clarence is that is owned by Bono & The Edge of Irish rock group U2... another one of my favorite bands. I have also included a video by U2.... enjoy....

When I watched Diane Sawyer's interview with Randy Pausch some months ago I remember thinking to myself... "This guy knows how to live life... and he's dying". I found him and his wife and their choices/attitudes to be very inspirational and uplifting. Here's a guy dying of cancer cheering us up... WOW... that's faith lived out! Randy passed away today at age 47... he has left a legacy and hope that will never die... Thanks Randy!

... my life, along with everyone in my family's, changed forever. It was this day 10 years ago that Kristi, my sister/friend, was killed in a tragic car accident. Needless to say... even after ten years these days are still tough... surreal might be a better word. The past few years I have used my art as therapy and found comfort in painting portraits of Kristi on July 20th... it became our special way of spending time together.

This year was a little different... art still proved therapeutic for me but it was through the eyes, hands, and heart of another artist... Alicia Sotherland. I was surfing the net yesterday and came across a recent painting Alicia had just finished titled "Morning Light"... I was totally "in awe" and blown away when I viewed it. A comfort and peace came over me as I felt in my soul this was not mere chance but something Divine.

I emailed Alicia and the story gets better... I found a warm and compassionate person who was touched by the story. She gave me permission to display her painting here. Those of you who knew Kristi will be in for that same "in awe feeling" I got when I viewed this painting... scroll down and see what I mean....

Great News... My first solo show set for August 2009.

I just received some great news... my recent trip to Ireland will be the inspiration behind my first solo art exhibit set for the Baysden Gallery in August 2009. The exhibit is titled "Enchanting Ireland" and I have exactly one year to paint approx. 24 paintings for the show. I look forward to sharing this journey with you and could use your encouragement every step of the way. I have been sorting through the 1900+ reference images I took trying to chronicle a story about this special trip. I hope to capture the beauty of the country and her people in this special series.

Ireland is a lovely country and the Irish people were so warm... "Enchanting"... just as our Go Ahead Tour was aptly named. Our perfect vacation was made complete by the our wonderful tour guide, Allie, bus driver, Hugh, and all the friends we made on our tour. Here they all are... Click on image to enlarge.

The real Emerald Isle... Ireland!

Jakers... the Irish expression for WOW!... sums up perfectly how we feel about this trip. We are like "Wild Geese" returning home. Tami's g-g-g-great grandfather, Dudley Lee, left Dublin at age 11 for the new world in 1770... 238 years later his family returns... how cool is that!

We look forward to sharing our adventure with you upon our return...

The Curse of the Lottery

The story 20/20 did on Jack Whittaker, winner of $315 million in the Powerball multi-state lottery in 2002, was heavy, to say the least. (Since he opted to take a one-time payout, Whittaker actually received "only" a little over $113 million after taxes.) His is yet another in a long line of tales about people who suddenly find themselves immensely wealthy - and subsequently miserable.

The first reality of newfound wealth that Whittaker was confronted with was an endless parade of people with requests for money. Some folks didn't even bother to ask for a handout in person. They just sent letters - 50,000 of them! - telling him they needed some of his green stuff.

Whittaker forked over about $50 million before he came to his senses. But when he backed away from his role as year-round Santa Claus, the moochers became angry. A number of them even threatened him.

When their threats failed, many of the good folks in West Virginia started suing Deep Pockets Whittaker for a variety of alleged torts. (He's counted about 400 legal claims against him since he won the lottery.)

Confused and intensely unhappy, Whittaker began carousing, drinking, and propositioning young gals in strip clubs. His wife of 44 years threw him out, and, after giving away millions, he found himself with no friends.

But there was one glowing light in his life - his beloved granddaughter, 17-year-old Brandi. Whittaker gave her four new cars and an allowance of $2,000 a week. It was a real-life Beverly Hillbillies saga, only played out in West Virginia instead of California.

As one might have predicted, having that kind of cash in her pocket led Whittaker's granddaughter to drugs. Soon after that, in September 2003, her boyfriend, Jesse Tribble, died of a drug overdose in Whittaker's home. Then, a little over a year later, Brandi, too, was found dead of an overdose.

Stating the obvious in his tearful 20/20 interview, Jack Whittaker said, "Money is not what makes people happy." Of course, every half-sober, mature adult already knows that. But it's also important to understand that money doesn't automatically saddle a wealthy person with unhappiness.

Money, contrary to the popular aphorism, is not "the root of all evil." And, in fact, that's not what the source of those words - The New Testament (Timothy, 6:10) - actually says. Rather, it states, "For the LOVE of money is the root of all evil." (My emphasis.)

What makes money (and, I would suggest, fame) appear to be evil is the way some people react to it. From Marilyn to Anna Nicole to Britney, it's as though money is a demon that brings certain people to their knees.

It seems to me that the trouble begins when people who find themselves with instant riches relate to it in a way that causes them to reflect on that age-old question, "Is that all there is?" And the answer to that question is always, "No, that is not all there is." As Jack Whittaker discovered, money cannot buy friendship, money cannot buy love, and money cannot buy a meaningful purpose in life.

I think the reason we see so much of the lost-soul syndrome among Hollywoodites is because the odds of achieving success in the world of glitz and glitter borders on the same odds as winning the lottery. When you're suddenly making $10 million to $25 million for memorizing someone else's words and mouthing them in front of a camera, it's not difficult to understand why it might have a detrimental effect on your psyche. In all honesty, I'd probably feel guilty, too, if I got paid that kind of money just for pretending to be someone else for a few weeks. (I'd take it, of course, but I'd feel guilty.)

This, I believe, is what causes so many celluloid stars to desperately search for meaning in half-baked causes, redistribution-of-the-wealth politics, or adopting needy children halfway around the world (when they could do just as much good by adopting needy children right in their own hometowns). To paraphrase Richard Bach in The Bridge Across Forever, when you suddenly come into a lot of money, it's like being handed a glass sword, blade first. You had better handle it very carefully while you take the time to figure out what in the heck you're supposed to do with it.

Bach should know. He went from journeyman writer to author of Jonathan Livingston Seagull (which was then the biggest-selling non-fiction book of all time) to bankruptcy! In other words, he's been there. He took the bait and grabbed the glass sword by the blade.

If you are fortunate enough to one day find yourself the recipient of great wealth, heed Bach's warning about money. Handle it carefully. And before doing anything foolish, ponder long and hard what it's for.

Even better, start pondering that right now. By doing so, you not only will be ready for the glass sword if and when it makes its appearance, but, should it never get around to showing up, life without money will be much more meaningful to you.

My heart goes out to Jack Whittaker. May he find meaning in his travails with his windfall fortune... and a meaningful purpose in his life.

Everyday objects painted from life is the essence of the "Painting a Day" art movement. I love painting everyday objects in such a way they tell a story. Many are inspired by scripture. This still life I set up and painted in my studio is such an example. My inspiration comes from Jesus' words in Matthew... "You are the salt of the earth" and "You are the light of the world." I think it cool the fact that one can associate salt with taste and thus the mouth and light with sight. Plainly put... our words (what comes out of our mouth) and actions (what others see us do) reveal who we really are.

To fuel my inspiration I set the CD player to repeat Third Day's "City on a Hill" while I painted away!

Olivia (my six year old daughter and painting buddy) recently was asked by Andrew, an art collector and friend, to paint a special painting for him of Blackwater Falls. He sent her this photo he took of the falls as her subject. Andrew told her that he had been following her earlier works and wanted her to paint this special painting to hang in his restaurant in Oakland, Maryland.

Blackwater Falls is the highest falls in West Virginia and is a beautiful site to behold.

Dad set up her easel and palette and the young artist began her work...

To be honest... I was quite shocked at how well she was doing. I explained to her how to block in certain areas and she caught on quickly.

The impasto work of the cascading water was the part I liked the best. I showed her how to paint one tree and before I knew it she was putting Bob Ross to shame.

My Tribute to Christian Rock Band..."Third Day"

My Third Day tribute...

My wife, Tami, and I have been Third Day fans since we first heard "My Hope is You" on a WOW album in the 90's... in my humble opinion they are one of the best rock bands around! If you love the Lord and rock music, you will LOVE this band (if you don't already). Check out their website... Third Day.

Saturday, March 1, 2008, the stage was set for a perfect day and night... time off from work... a weekend to spend with our two older daughters and son-in-law... and.... Third Day concert tickets for the House of Blues in Myrtle Beach.

Here we are waiting in line for the (standing room only) concert. I think we were near the North Carolina state line when this photo was taken by a lady in front of us. Left to right: Mom and Dad (me), Whitney, Lyndsey and Matt. Tami and I saw Third Day in concert in 2003 in Raleigh. Lyndsey and Matt saw them on the "Come Together" tour in Fayetteville. This was Whitney's first time!

The opening acts... Revive and NeedtoBreathe were SUPERB!

Third Day took the stage... I noticed right away the absence of Brad Avery. I was hoping he was alright and that nothing had happened to him. I must admit that the first couple of songs the band seemed a bit awkward... they sounded great but something seemed a bit off. At that point Mac explained that Brad had left the band and this was only their second show in his absence. Mac mentioned that everyone in the band would give 120% and as he spoke it seemed and served as a prayer... From that point on it was as if a burden was lifted from them and they performed a show that was flawless and AWESOME! It was obvious that each of them gave more than the 120% they promised. I especially tip my hat to Mark... he stepped up and filled any guitar gaps... in fact... his guitar work was more than enough to make for a perfect show!

Legendary Drummer Buddy Miles passed away this Tuesday, peacefully at his home in Austin, TX. He was (60) sixty years old. He suffered from congestive heart failure but the official cause of death is not known.

Buddy performed with some of the greatest names in music including Stevie Wonder,Muddy Waters, Michael Bloomfield, Wilson Pickett, Stephen Stills, Neil Young, David Crosby, Jack Bruce, Eric Burden, Peter Torque, Billy Gibbons, Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Jimmy Vaughan, Rick James, Kool and the Gang, Jr. Brown, Ike Turner,Pinetop Perkins, Jr. Wells, Koko Taylor, Johnny Taylor, Barry White, Aretha Franklin, George Clinton, Bootsy Collins, Carlos Santana, Robert Lockwood, Jr., Billy Cox,David Bowie and others.

Buddy Miles recorded over 70 albums and performed in numerous world tours, television commercials and videos. He is best known for his work with Jimi Hendrix and bass player Billy Cox in Band of Gypsys.

Band of Gypsys recorded one album appropriately titled "Band of Gypsys" in 1970 at Fillmore East in New York. Two of the songs on the album were written by Miles. ("We Gotta Live Together" and "Changes").

Living History / Plein Air Demo at Fort Fisher

Saturday, January 12, 2008, I had the privilege of attending the 143rd Anniversary Commemoration of the Second Battle at Fort Fisher. The Living History program included artillery and infantry demonstrations, period music, fort tours, and a living history/plein air demo by yours truly. I have migrated from soldier to civilian in my hobby of Civil War reenacting... actually I have taken on the role of a period artist. My impression is based on a combination of two artists... Alfred Waud (probably the most noted of period sketch artists) and Winslow Homer who painted scenes from the war and became one of America's most famous painters. One of his most famous works was "Sharpshooter on Picket Duty" pictured below.

After a down pour the sun came out and I set up my French easel and began to paint. I positioned myself to paint Shepherd's Battery with the palisade making for an interesting composition. Shepherd's Battery was where the main brunt of the attack occurred 143 years ago. Here I am posed (seated) with my pards at Shepherd's Battery in 2004.

Fort Fisher during the war was known as the Gibraltar of the South. It was important to the southern cause because it protected the mouth of the Cape Fear River where blockade runners would travel to deliver supplies to Wilmington. From Wilmington they were distributed throughout the Confederacy. When the fort fell January 15, 1865... it only took 3 months for the Confederacy to collapse.

I spoke with several people about the history of plein air painting and how the invention of the metal paint tube in the mid 1800's made it possible for painters to go outside and paint "en plein aire" for the first time... a French term which means "in open air".

"NC Landscapes: From the Mountains to the Coast" exhibit at the Baydsen Gallery

The art exhibit, "North Carolina Landscapes: From the Mountains to the Coast", is currently on display in the Baydsen Gallery at the Council for the Arts. The exhibit opened Monday, January 7th, and will run through the 31st.

The exhibit is made up of works by local artists who were invited to share their works of our beautiful state. I was very fortunate to have four oil paintings accepted... all mountain works... I may live of the coast but the Blue Ridge mountains sing a special song to my heart.

The quilt is a symbol of comfort and family... Barns are symbols of our heritage and community... together they make a great art project and visual treat for the folks in Ashe County, NC. This old barn scene is set in Ashe County where the local arts council there had various artists and art school classes design and paint these quilt patterns and had them affixed to barns throughout the county as a visual treat.

My Plein Air Adventure in the Blue Ridge Mountains!

I recently returned from a seven day "dream come true" painting trip from the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. I loaded up the old Honda with painting gear and clothing designed for cold weather plein air painting. I recently purchased and received the DVD series "Plein Air Painting the American Landscape" and had been watching them nightly as a motivating prelude of my upcoming adventure. I started my trek alone early Sunday, November 18th... Tami, Olivia, and our two cats (Simba and Angel) were to join me Thanksgiving Day. On the way... I stopped at the NC Museum Of Art in Raleigh to view the current exhibit... Landscapes from the Age of Impressionism. Seeing those original works by Monet, Renoir, Boudin, Sargent, etc... was the crowning touch - a pep rally motivating me even more for the trip. I arrived in the afternoon... picked up some groceries (essentials like coffee and hot dogs) and settled in. We have a family lodge in Fleetwood... a small community between Boone and West Jefferson, NC, so settling in really means making myself feel at home. My game plan was to plein air paint through the day and set up "daily painting" still lifes to paint at night. I was able to stick to that plan for most of the week finishing 7 plein air works and 3 still life paintings.

Plein air painting for me is challenging yet relaxing. I love the challenge of the changing light and weather conditions with the relaxation gained from communing with nature. I am not exaggerating when I say it is spiritual for me... a way of spending quiet time with God and His awesome creation! The sights, sounds, smells, and interaction with nature and the occasional hiker makes for a great experience which fills all my senses and allows me a story tied to each painting.

After a trip into Boone to shop at my favorite candy store... Cheap Joe's Art Stuff... I headed along Railroad Grade Road trying to narrow down one of a hundred beautiful spots to paint from. I found a view of a barn (I have painted several times) from Todd Island... a small island park in the middle of the South Fork Branch of the New River. This old barn has so much character... I never tire of painting it... BTW... thanks Artie! ;)

The weather was mild and clear for most of the week... except this day... I painted this one in a cold drizzle. After almost two hours... the cold drizzle turned into a downpour and I RAN to the car with painting (95% complete) in hand.

Blue Ridge Plein Air #2...
One of my favorite spots on earth is Rough Ridge Lookout located at mile marker 302 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Rough Ridge is actually the backside of Grandfather Mountain and the views there are magnificent! See what I mean...

The weather was very comfortable for late November but the wind was gusting at 40 mph at times... I had paintbrush in one hand and steadied my easel with the other.

I painted this view of the Lin Cove Viaduct from about half way up the ridge painting from a wooden lookout. I met several nice people while painting this one...

Blue Ridge Plein Air #3...
Returning home from Rough Ridge I was attracted to the light in this simple scene and how the bare winter trees seemed to glow on the shadow side of the hill. This small piece was captured near the banks of the New River as the afternoon sun was in its golden splendor. I overemphasized the small road that was there... something about country lanes and roads... I find them so inviting and peaceful. Anyone who has collected my work recognizes them as a common theme.

Blue Ridge Plein Air #4...
I woke up early as usual on Wednesday the 21st. The mist was everywhere... wanting to capture it I headed down Fleetwood Mountain and along Railroad Grade Road and the New River to find the perfect spot.

I set up along the banks looking into the rising sun as it back-lit the mist and silhouetted the trees in the scene. Here I am looking toward Todd Island that I mentioned in Plein Air #1.

Blue Ridge Plein Air #5...
This peaceful scene is set just below our mountain lodge. Two days earlier I set out to paint this scene in the late afternoon... As I got to the foot of the hill I heard two gunshots (rather close I might add) so I decided to wait. I could just see the headlines now... "Plein air painter mistaken for deer!" Maybe midday when there's a lull in hunting time would be a better choice... it was... two days later offered a better opportunity and as you can see... I'm among the living as I type this blog entry... :)

Blue Ridge Plein Air #6...
I woke early Thanksgiving morning and decided to get at least one more plein air painting in before Tami, Olivia, and cats arrived later that morning. This scene is set on Fleetwood Mountain near our lodge on The Ridge. We walk this road everyday for exercise and I wanted to capture it before it is scattered with mountain homes. I got to met several people as they were enjoying their daily walks as well.

Thanksgiving Day brought Tami, Olivia, the cats, and the COLD weather! It was 60 degrees when I painted the Ridge plein air... later that evening it was snowing!

Blue Ridge Plein Air #7...
Saturday morning I ventured out in the cold to paint the mountain lake near our lodge... you can see the temperature in the photo below...

I set up and began painting... a lovely scene of the mist on the lake but I soon realized it wasn't working and it became what we plein air painters call a "scrapper". After scrapping it I began painting another scene of the lake with a lone kayak on shore. Before I finished... someone took the kayak out for a spin that's why you don't see in the image below.

My fingers could barely move but I loved the crisp cold air and found it exhilarating. Hope to paint in the snow sometime this winter... but as for now this is as close as I'll get...

I'll share the finished painting soon... left it in the mountains to dry.

My Blue Ridge Plein Air Adventure was awesome! Nature in all its grandeur! Not only were the natural vistas beautiful but I got to witness several wild animals... about 20 wild turkeys, 4 deer, a Pileated Woodpecker, several wood ducks, to name a few.
~
Every single moment made me appreciate God's creation even more than ever. Let's take care of this gift he has given us...

Snuggles spends the weekend with Olivia!

Snuggles... a lovely, cuddly bear... spent the weekend with Olivia. Snuggles travels home every weekend with a student from Mrs Tyson's first grade class. The students document their adventures with him in a journal... this weekend it was Olivia's turn to hang out with Snuggles...

Time for a treatment... Snuggles even got to try it out.

Saturday morning was the best... Snuggles and Olivia enjoyed watching the Jacksonville Christmas Parade... Sponge Bob was there too...

To top that... Snuggles and Olivia got to toast marshmallows at Granny's party with a few of her classmates from the Jacksonville Senior High School "Class of 1961"...

After an eventful weekend... Olivia and Snuggles call it a night!

An Apple for the Teacher... Art Demo for Mrs Tyson's 1st Grade Class...

I'm an advocate for the arts... with that said... I believe that introducing the arts to children is of the utmost importance.

Did you know?
~ The arts teach kids to be more tolerant and open.
~ The arts allow kids to express themselves creatively.
~ The arts promote individuality, bolster self-confidence, and improve overall academic performance.
~ The arts can help troubled youth, providing an alternative to delinquent behavior and truancy while providing an improved attitude toward school.

Young people who participate in the arts for at least three hours on three days each week through at least one full year are:
~ 4 times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
~ 3 times more likely to be elected to class office within their schools
~ 4 times more likely to participate in a math and science fair
~ 3 times more likely to win an award for school attendance
~ 4 times more likely to win an award for writing an essay or poem

Recently... I did an art demo in my daughter Olivia's, first grade class. I set up a small still life and the children watched me paint an apple from life. We talked about painting and the arts in general. We also discussed the things they are doing in school right now that may be helpful in the career of an artist... things like the importance of each subject they are taking and how that relates to being a successful artist. They offered some GREAT answers and insights. Olivia was in rare form as she was helping every step of the way... afterall... she is my painting buddy! In fact... we reached a point where I painted and she answered the questions. The kids were more interested in her as an artist... asking her questions like... "When did she start painting?"... "What does she love to paint most?"... I enjoyed seeing her and the class interact... a GREAT day in making memories!

Beth Jaeger Benefit Concert on November 18th

Many of you know Beth and Rob Jaeger... about Beth's battle with cancer... in fact... many of you have been praying for her and her family for some time now. Tami and I taught Beth in Sunday School and have watched her grow up to be a fine woman, wife, and mom. Seems like yesterday she was in our class but that was ten years ago. Rob and Beth joined the Cape Fear Living History Society (CFLHS) a few years ago which has enabled me to stay in touch with them. Members of CFLHS are planning a benefit concert for her to off set some of the drastic costs that one can only imagine comes with such a battle. The Sons of Dixie are coming out of retirement to preform a benefit concert for the Jaeger's... plus... The Huckleberry Brothers (pictured below) consisting of several CFLHS members will also be performing. Both groups perform a variety of Civil War period songs, using period instruments, and wearing period clothing. The concert is set for Sunday, November 18, 2007 at 3:00 PM at Swanyk's Scarlet and Gold (222 Henderson Dr., Jacksonville). Sgt Major Swanyk (retired) was kind enough to donate the use of his club and stage for this special event. A $10 minimum donation gets you in for the double concert but please feel free to give more. If you cannot make this special event but would like to donate money to benefit the Jaegers you can do so by sending a check to the CFLHS Treasurer:

Olivia's Portrait FINALLY Finished...

Many of you followed Olivia's portrait WIP's (Works in Progress) that coincided with the adventure of her first month of kindergarten last year... I hit a lull and the portrait sat on my easel for months. This summer... just before she started the first grade I finished it. I just entered it yesterday in Coastal Carolina Community College's 30th Annual Public Art Exhibition which reminded me that I haven't shared the finished painting with everyone. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this one gets juried into the show. The exhibition will be open from November 1st through November 16th in the Fine Arts Building on the campus with a reception on November 7th from 5:00-7:00pm.

Many of you know that Tami and I ran a portrait photography studio for years... hard to believe that was almost 10 years ago. Tuesday I had a chance to pick up the camera in a studio situation again... longtime friend, Dean Remington, (he and his wife, Patty, own and operate Remington Photo) invited me in to his studio to take photos of my new grandson, Camden. Lyndsey, Camden, and I met at his studio on Western Blvd and the games began. Lyndsey had several outfits but was wanting a particular shot of the baby naked except for a bow and tag that read "From God"... afterall that is where babies come from. I took several photos with this new fangled digital camera that was awesome... I must confess that the desire to do photgraphy again even with this new camera and technology was NOT there. I passed the camera to Dean, the real photographer, and he got some great shots... here's one he and Lyndsey came up with plus a bit of computer flair added in...

OOPS!... almost forgot to tell you about a new artist group I belong to... the Onslow Outdoor Painters Society (OOPS! for short). Simply put... we are a group of Onslow County artists who gather and carry on the tradition of painting "en plein aire" (that's French for "in the open air").

Many of you know that for ten years I made a living as a portrait photographer... funny thing... I seldom pick up the camera now other than the typical family snapshot. Like most of you out there... I have a simple point-and-shoot digital camera that seems to suffice most of my photo needs. Other than those family snapshots... most of the pictures I take now are for references for my paintings. Here's an image I took in the spring at the Wounded Warriors Run that I had planned to paint but decided to share it here as a simple photograph... the old saying, "A Picture Speaks a Thousand Words" holds true here...

BTW... I really liked Pastor Kelley's suggestion of naming me Bubba... I just couldn't convince Mom and Dad to go for it.

My "Old Dad" said I could use his blog to introduce myself so here goes...

I arrived today at 3:21 PM and weighed in at a whopping 8 pounds 4 ounces. I'm pretty tall for my age... 20 inches to be exact! I'm twenty minutes old in this snapshot. All the old people say I'm a gift from God...

I'd introduce myself properly but there's only one problem... Mommy and Daddy haven't decided on my name yet. Old Dad says it doesn't matter to him cause he said he'd make up some cool nickname to call me anyways.

Here's Mommy, Daddy, Sissy, and Aunt Livie... I'm thirty minutes old now!

My sister, Savannah, thinks I'm some kind of baby-doll and keeps kissing me. I'm glad she loves me so much... to be honest... I heard she was a tough cookie and there may be trouble when I came out. I think I'm safe... I heard her tell Old Dad and Nonnie that her baby brother came out OK but I'm not allowed in her room. She insists that my name is Camden...

Here I am with my big brother, Christian. All the old people keep saying I look just like him when he was a baby. He thinks my name should be Hunter...

I've got a bunch of grandparents... some live far away and couldn't make it today. Here's all my grandma's that came for my grand entrance. Left to right... Nonnie, Granny, Nana, Grandma, and Maw. Someone said a couple were great grandmas but I think they're all GREAT!

Here's my granddads that showed up for the party. Left to right... Paw, Poppa, Old Dad, and Pappy. Another GREAT bunch of people who I know will shower me with gifts and love...

It has been a very eventful day... I heard Daddy say that Mommy pushed for seven minutes... whatever that means. Took me awhile to get used to the bright lights but I'm enjoying my new surroundings. Can't wait to get to my real house and see how things go... but for now... I'm bushed... it's been a long day!

I have been blessed with success this month with my work. I entered four paintings into two different juried art shows and had three accepted. Hip-Hip-Hooray!... cause 3 out of 4 ain't bad.....

Show #1... "Onslow Art Society's "Images 2007" juried show can be seen from now till September 28th at the Council for the Arts in downtown Jacksonville. Details (and photos) about the show can be found here...

My Art Journal ~ Book II

I plan to use this new blog as a journal to document my artwork accompanied by my thoughts, inspirations, and experiences behind each work. I also plan to include technical data such as palette choices and technique when available.

Artistic Release was the name chosen for this site because that is the quest I am on. Like most artists... I feel the need to create... art is therapeutic for me. My favorite medium is oils... just the thought of working as the Old Masters did centuries ago excites me and gives me a sense of connectedness to them. I enjoy many styles ranging from Classical, Traditional, Contemporary, and Abstract, to Impressionism. I work in other mediums (charcoals ranking high in my book)... BUT... oils are my passion!

I hope you join me on this journey and share your thoughts and questions about my art along the way. It may even seem like a spiritual journey at times... Michelangelo said it best...

"An artist should paint as if in the presence of God"
