Olivia's First Commission as an Artist... WOW... a PRO at Six!

Olivia (my six year old daughter and painting buddy) recently was asked by Andrew, an art collector and friend, to paint a special painting for him of Blackwater Falls. He sent her this photo he took of the falls as her subject. Andrew told her that he had been following her earlier works and wanted her to paint this special painting to hang in his restaurant in Oakland, Maryland.

Blackwater Falls is the highest falls in West Virginia and is a beautiful site to behold.

Dad set up her easel and palette and the young artist began her work...

To be honest... I was quite shocked at how well she was doing. I explained to her how to block in certain areas and she caught on quickly.

~
The impasto work of the cascading water was the part I liked the best. I showed her how to paint one tree and before I knew it she was putting Bob Ross to shame.

Andrew sent her a letter and a generous check to put in her "Fat Cat" bank account! Needless to say... she was very excited!

Andrew's gesture and words were so encouraging... she is STILL beaming!

Thanks Andrew!

Olivia informed me that she'd love to read your comments... please leave her a few words... Thanks!

My dear Olivia,
What an amazing artist you are! I certainly wish someone had encouraged me as a youngster and you are ONLY 6??? OK, now I am throwing away my paints! It's a long road to be self taught & you are already on your way. Hooray!

I know your dad (a pretty great painter himself)from WetCanvas & have seen some other of your paintings there & can see marked improvement in your work!
Best of success in the future!

My daughter paints and draws too and I am proud of her and of you too. Remember it is a gift and always take care of it and help it to grow. Your Dad is a perfect teacher for you. Olivia, I am soooo impressed. The apple doesn't fall far from the tree! (Dad will explain that one) I am jealous that you have such ability at the age you are. I am only up to drawing stick figures these days...I could not imagine being able to paint like you! I thought your Dad had painted it when I first saw it! Then I figured it must be paint by number.....It is remarkable that you did this painting. Please continue to paint and PLEASE keep me on the mailing list. I can't hardly wait to see what you do next. I Love you, Erin

Keep it up and continue to make lots and lots of people happy. I know your Momma and Daddy are very proud of you. Cherri

Olivia,

You take a God given gift, water it with the love of the Holy Spirit and pretty soon that gift will give inspiration and hope to someone. I pray that your gift of painting will bring light into someone's day. I'm proud of you.

Dear Olivia,
I just saw your painting of Blackwater Falls. My mommy and me have been there many times, and it is a beautiful place to go. My mom said she would take me to Oak Mar to see the picture that you painted and I will brag to everyone that my cousin in NC did it! I am beginning to paint too, and will send you one of my artworks real soon. My mom said it would be nice for me to paint the place at Swallow Falls where your mom & dad got married.

WOW! Olivia...you and your Dad are true inspirations to other artists. You captured the essence of the beauty of the scene and what you have done is remarkable for someone as young as you. I would love for you to come demonstrate your talents to my classes just like your Dad has done several times! My middle schoolers would be amazed and perhaps motivated to see you in action! Hi, Olivia I walked around today seeing your Dad paint scenes of the Neuse. He was pleasent to talk with and to meet. The three paintings and areas to which he so skillfully laid on canvas was really close to home with me. As a small boy the thoughts raced through my mind of the tmes that I had 40+ years ago! It bought me back to the Countless walks and bike rides and parts of my life that I thought were gone and ereased forever. From digging up the old gun boat in the early
60's. Even the old train depo
that I could stil see as the dock hands loaded and stacked waiting box cars.To the many buildings to which he painted are still in place minus the people going in and out the doors. So Olivia thats the proof that your Dads work with a brush does have a meaning with each and every Stroke. So put your footprints in his and walk with your brush in your hand and one day you will make your art work come to LIFE!!!
